Shirley Mae Anderson, age 74, of Bricelyn, died Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at Heartland Sr. Living Parkview Campus in Wells, MN. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Bricelyn Lutheran Church in Bricelyn, MN with Pr. Mary Iverson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Interment will be in Bricelyn Lutheran Cemetery, Seely Township, Faribault Co., MN in the spring.
Shirley was born February 15, 1945 at Mercy Hospital in Mason City, IA the daughter of Maynard and Arlene (Flatness) Hamsund. The family lived in Joice, Iowa until age 3 when her family moved to Kiester, MN. Shirley graduated Kiester High School, the class of 1963. She had worked in Minneapolis for 7 years at North American Life and Casualty Insurance Company. Shirley married Joel Anderson, October 30, 1971 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Kiester. Shortly after their marriage the couple moved to Bricelyn, where they farmed and raised two children. She loved her family and decorating her home for every season and holiday. She loved to read books and watch TCM Channel with a Pepsi in her hand. She kept up with the celebrity's lives via her favorite People magazine. Shirley was a tiny woman, but she cheered from the bleachers at sporting events and made sure her kids and grandkids could hear her from the stands. Shirley also worked at Bud's Café, the Bricleyn Canning Factory, St. Luke's Lutheran Care Center and Seneca Foods. She was a long-time member of Bricelyn Lutheran Church and taught Sunday school for several years. She enjoyed bowling and bird watching. Shirley especially enjoyed time with her kids and grandkids. The highlight of family vacations was roasting marshmallows while sitting around the bonfire.
She is survived by her mother: Arlene Hamsund of The Shepherd's Inn of Wells; children: Alison (Kevin) Steinhauer of Frost, Craig (Amy) Anderson of Wells; grandchildren: Matthew Krause and Laura Steinhauer; Trevor (Emily) Leland, Lizzy Leland (fiancé Logan Bauer); great-grandkids: Norie and Taylin Leland; brother: Robert "Bob" (Joyce) Hamsund of Albert Lea; sister-in-law: Jean (Merlin) Vandervorste; 4 nephews and their families: Todd (Lois) Anderson, Patrick (Lillian) Anderson, Chris (Missy) Hamsund, Mike (Dani) Hamsund.
She is preceded in death by her father Maynard, husband Joel in 2011, father and mother-in-law: Alvin (Alice) Anderson, brother-in-law, Rodney Anderson and nephew Mark Anderson.
