Shirley Ann Kopecek, age 78, of St. James, formerly of Pemberton, died Sunday, November 25, 2018 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, November 29, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Clair, MN. Father Timothy Hall will officiate. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 28, 2018 from 4:00-7:00 PM at Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Interment will be 11:00 AM Friday, November 30th at Freeborn Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the MS Society.
Shirley Ann was born December 23, 1939 in Freeborn County, the daughter of Herman and Florence (Young) Johannsen. She was baptized and confirmed at Freeborn UCC. Shirley graduated from Freeborn High School the class of 1957. She married Joseph Kopecek on January 30, 1960 in Wells, MN. Shirley worked at Wilson and Co. in Albert Lea, MN and was a bank teller in Freeborn for 20 years. After moving to Pemberton she managed the MotorMart for several years until her Multiple Sclerosis advanced. In July of 2016 Shirley moved into Pleasantview Good Samaritan Society in St. James due to her MS, where she received excellent care from the kind and caring staff.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years Joe of St. James, MN; children: Patty (Dave) Brandts of St. James, MN and Linda (Randy) Kemnitz of CA; 6 granddaughters: Kelly (Tom) Johnson of Searles, MN, Tammy Johnson (Kent Winters) of Butterfield, MN, Holly Johnson of Mankato, MN, Madison Kemnitz of Chicago, IL, Morgan and McKenna Kemnitz of CA; 4 step-grandchildren: Oniel, Sonti, Andre and Mariah Brandts; 3 great-grandchildren: Logan and Noah Johnson and Halle Johnson; siblings: Barbara McDonald of Emmons, MN, Joan (Hollis) Grorud of Albert Lea, MN, and Jim Johannsen of Albert Lea, MN; aunts: Martha Ignaszewski of Wells, MN, Elvira Young of New Richland, MN and Betty Johannsen of Albert Lea, MN; uncle Norbert Groskreutz of Wells, MN; several nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
