Raphael William Schultz was born to Paul Edward and Mary Frances Schultz on June 30th, 1922 in the rural farming community of Wells in southern Minnesota.

After graduating from Wells High School in 1940, Raphael went to St. Paul, MN where he initially lived with his sister Fran and delivered flowers for St. Paul Floral. He was then employed at the Fuller Brush Company and Hamm's Brewery. Raphael enjoyed the city but a farm boy at heart he returned to his hometown of Wells and pursued farming like his father.

While at a dance in Albert Lea, he caught the eye of a beautiful Norwegian girl, Ruth Sylvia Bakken, who became the love of his life and they were married on January 29th, 1955. Raphael and Ruth lived in Wells and raised their three children: Brenda Schultz of Minneapolis, MN, Nancy Schultz of Eagan, MN, and Paul Schultz, of Salt Lake City, UT.

In addition to farming, he worked construction in the winter months building schools in Albert Lea and Kiester, MN, was elected county commissioner, developed Half Moon Circle, and drove truck for Del Monte.

Raphael had the benefit of many friends, relatives and a wife who loved to travel. He enjoyed card and dinner parties, going uptown for coffee and visiting with friends at the grain elevator and auto repair shop. He visited his brothers and sisters in St. Paul, Chicago, and Longmont telling stories of their childhood until they laughed so hard they cried.

The Caribbean, Hawaii, Canada, North Africa, South America, Australia, Asia, and Europe (serendipitously running into his sister Mary and her family while on a Rhine River cruise) were places he traveled with Ruth and his family; although Las Vegas may have been his favorite destination. Even at 97 years old he could still "beat the house" in a game of blackjack and enjoyed talking to the dealers and other players.

On November 23, 2019, Raphael returned to his eternal Father. Raphael will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and the many people he touched during his long life. He was preceded in death by his brothers Aurelius, Ambrose, Urban, John, and sisters Frances (Frank) Chirpich, Mary (Robert) Merry, and Sister Mary Paul Schultz C. R.(Therese); and survived by his wife, children, brother James Schultz (Sue), Woodstock, IL, sisters Margaret (Melvin) Voigt, Wells, MN, Sister Maria Schultz C. R. (Bernadette), Chicago, IL., and many nieces and nephews.

CELEBRATION OF LIFE: The family will receive relatives and friends at Annunciation Catholic Church, 509 W 54th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55419, 612.824.0787 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 11, 2019. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM followed by a luncheon.

The Schultz family is grateful to Patty Cibuzar APRN CNP and the Mount Olivet Careview Home staff for the kindness, care, and support given to Raphael. We also want to thank the physicians and nurses at the University of Minnesota, Fairview Southdale, and Methodist Hospitals (especially Dr. David C. Homans, Cardiologist) for their expertise over the years.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Raphael's name to the University of Minnesota Masonic Cancer Center at or to St. Casimir's School in Wells, MN at
