Melvin Harley Voigt, age 97, of Wells, MN died Monday, November 11, 2019 at his home surrounded by his family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, November 18, 2019 at 10:30 AM at St. Casimir Catholic Church in Wells. Visitation will be Sunday, November 17, 2019 from 2:00-5:00 PM at Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Father Greg Havel will officiate. Interment will be at the St. Casimir Catholic Cemetery, with military honors accorded by the Wells Color Guard.
Melvin Harley was born October 23, 1922 the son of Oscar and Helen (Meyer) Voigt in Swea City, IA. He graduated from Alden High School in 1941 and then went to work at Augst Hardware. He became friends with Margaret Schultz before being called to service during WWII. Melvin joined the U. S. Army and served from December 1942-1946. Melvin was stationed at Burma, and then Holland, where he was a Tank Commander. He went to the Philippines in early 1945, and was engaged in the Battle of Baguio across the island from the Gulf of Manila. Melvin's next orders were to go to Nagasaki, but the following day the war ended. After the service he returned home and Melvin and Margaret rekindled their friendship. They were married May 3, 1948 and to this union eight children were born. Melvin worked at Super Structure in Albert Lea, MN, and had dry cleaning routes for Wells Cleaners and Wandersee Cleaners in Mankato. Melvin and Margaret farmed for many years in the Wells area, teaching their children many invaluable life lessons. After 1973 Melvin and Margaret found time to vacation. During the years they traveled to California, Florida, Virginia, Oregon, Oklahoma, Hawaii and Vienna. Melvin retired in 1983 and the couple moved from the farm to their current home in town.
Melvin is survived by his wife Margaret of Wells; children: Lenore (Tom) Henning of Glen Ellyn, IL, Renee (Paul) Baer of Panama City Beach, FL, Kevin (Cindy) Voigt of Wells, Bryon (Jackie) Voigt of Wells, Mary (Jim) Fuller of Goliad, TX, and Leila (Brett) Jans of Nisswa, MN; grandchildren: Alyssa (Ned) Wetzel-Moore, Jessica Henning, Anne Henning, Cathryn Henning (Chris Regan), Deanna (Chuck) Clemens, Emily ( Mike) Thompson, Brandon (Angie) Voigt, Lane Voigt, Mara Voigt, Jon (Amanda) Fuller, James (Mary London) Fuller, Jared Fuller (Laura McCalla), Allie Jo Voigt (Michael Drager), Steven Voigt, Jenny Rose (Robert) Sichmeller, Jon (Brittany) Voigt, Tom (Ashton) Voigt; great-grandchildren: Oscar and Aaron Wetzel-Moore, Vinny and Audrey Voigt, Gabrielle Voigt, Cora Clemens, Jon Clay Fuller, Helen Fuller, Payton and Blake Sichmeller and Ivan Voigt; one sister Ladonna Seipp of Albert Lea, MN; daughter-in-law: Sue (Britt) Hendrickson of Wells; and son-in-law: Alan (Brenda) Wetzel of St. Paul, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son Michael Voigt; daughter Lynn Wetzel; grandson Daniel Voigt; siblings: Hilbert, Mervon, Melva, Marlin and Marvine.
