Mavis Lucille Leland was born on her family's farm near Frost, MN, to Emma Walker and Mike Knutson, Oct 22, 1928. After graduating from Bricelyn High School, she attended teachers training in Mankato, MN. Mavis was a young, energetic teacher, at a country school when she met Gehard "Bud" Leland. Two years later they were united in marriage on April 6, 1952 at the Lutheran Church in Frost. To this sixty-four year union 5 children were born, Gregory, Carter, Paulette, LuAnn and Jeffrey. Although Mavis taught country school for only a few years, her legacy as a life-long teacher continued throughout her life. She challenged everyone with her example, to achieve their very best. She relived many joyous moments while attending the class reunions of the country school where she was known as "Miss Knutson". Mavis's faith was foremost in her life. From daily devotions, to her commitment to Bricelyn Lutheran church with Sunday School and WELCA. A biblical quote quite often rolled off her lips in everyday conversations. She loved to sing; while cooking, in church choir, cantatas, her trio, Leland Family Singers, and the Lutefisk Girls. Known as "Macey" to her grandchildren and "Gigi" to her great –grandchildren she turned simple occasions into family traditions. Whether a stop-by visit, Halloween party, or birthday, she made them all memorable with cookies, special napkins, centerpieces and fun. A visit from "Grandma" was never without a treat from her purse. In her faith, flower gardens and music, Mavis leaves of legacy of inspiration to all.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Bud; brothers: Clarence and Ornell Knutson; sister Elaine Knutson.
Mavis is survived by 5 children: Greg (wife Kathy) Leland, Carter (wife Yvonne) Leland, Paulette (husband Kevin) Legred, all of Bricelyn, MN; LuAnn (husband Tommy) Kraemer of Prior Lake, MN, Jeff (wife Ann) Leland of Pine Island, MN; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren: Kelsey (Christoph) Dundas and family, Adelia, Caleb, Jacob, Emmaline; Michael Leland and Brian Leland; Dan (Trica) Leland, Bethany (Matt) Schoeneck and family, Karis and Gabriel; Jonathan (Janelle) Leland and family, Heath and Reese, Rebecca Leland; Justin (Amy) Legred and family, Ethan, Brennan and Brinley, Alicia (Nathan) Shutes and family, Henrik, Isaiah, Layla and Ruby; Jessica Kraemer; Mitchell, Garrett and Megan Leland; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Blessed be Her memory.
