Margaret Bridget Johnson, age 97, of Wells, MN died Monday, May 22, 2017 while receiving hospice care in Mankato, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, May 26, 2017 at 10:30 AM at St. Casimir Catholic Church in Wells, with Fr. Andrew Vogel officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, May 25, from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 PM at Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells, MN, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be at St. Casimir Cemetery in Wells.
Margaret was born November 1, 1919 in Easton, MN, the daughter of Peter and Nora (Murphy) O'Leary. She graduated from Wells High School, class of 1936. She was united in marriage to Wilfred E. Johnson November 10, 1938 in Wells, MN, and to this union 6 children were born. Margaret was an excellent homemaker, cook, baker, and cake decorator. She was employed as a Federal Poultry Inspector for many years. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, and Hardanger.
As a result of her son Sgt. Bruce E. Johnson's death on April 13, 1969, in Vietnam while serving in the U.S. Army, she was a National Gold Star Mother.
She was also a National Gold Star Sister, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, St. Casimir CCW-Circle 7, and Wells Senior Citizens. She was an active and faithful member of St. Casimir Catholic Church for 80+ years.
Margaret is survived by her children: Judy Whalen of Wells, MN, Dennis (Linda) Johnson of Minnetonka, MN, Brenda (Jim) Kellogg of Taopi, MN, and Loren (Patty) Johnson of Mankato, MN; 13 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and their families, and her Irish cousins; sisters-in-law, Darlene Redman, and Clarice Johnson.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Wilfred; parents; sons: Sgt. Bruce Johnson, and Darrel Johnson; son-in-law, Terry Whalen; grandson, Patrick Johnson; 3 brothers, and 6 sisters.
