Luverna Alvia was born August 7, 1916 on a farm six miles east of Wells, the daughter of Harry and Minnie Bracco the youngest of five daughters. Growing up she attended a one room school, and helped her Dad farm. She remembered plowing behind a horse. In 1929 the family moved to Littlefork, Minnesota where Luverna graduated from high school and lettered in several sports. She married Charles Brown in 1937. He was a plumber, and later had his own business. They had two children, a son, Donald Charles, and a daughter, Sybil Joyce. They moved into the Ruffing house at 393 1st Avenue S.W. They eventually built a new house on the same lot. Luverna worked at J.C. Penneys for many years, People's State Bank and other places in downtown Wells. She loved to be outdoors gardening, and painting her house. She also learned how to use her computer when she was in her 90s. LuVerna was very proud of the fact that she could operate her computer and couldn't imagine life without it. She enjoyed connecting and staying in contact with her family that way. She taught Hardanger, a Norwegian form of embroidery, in her own home, to many women. She made a long tablecloth, aprons for her granddaughter and herself, and many place mats. She and Charles joined Our Savior's Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School, and was President of the Ladies Aid. She was also active in school affairs, and became President of the PTA. She spent many hours getting her new home ready. Her children took many music lessons, and later graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Donald became a vocal music teacher, and his wife, Carolyn, taught home economics. Sybil became an elementary teacher. She married Norman Pavey who became a minister.

LuVerna is survived by her children: Donald (Carolyn) Brown of Estherville, IA and Sybil (Norman) Pavey of Omaha, NE; 4 grandchildren: Luke (Jill) Brown of Earlham, IA, Nathan (Sara) Brown of Eagle Lake, MN, Sarah O'Leary of Omaha, NE and Christopher Pavey (husband Michael Draper) of Merritt Island, FL; 6 great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, and other extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles; siblings: Ida (Emil) Horntasch, Anna (Garret) Hassing, Minnie (Otto) Gottberg, and Lillian (Franklin) Rose; grandson-in-law: Jed O'Leary.
