Russ was such a gentle, kindly soul. He had a gruff exterior, but he wasn't like that at all. We played cards together for several years, both in Freeborn and Minnesota Lake, and I especially valued his quick wit and low-key sense of humor. Something about his comments always struck me funny, and I think he realized that; now and then, he'd make a wry comment and I'd look up just in time to see him gradually turn away. But

I appreciated Russ' sharp, low-key sense of humor. We used to play cards together in Freeborn, and he'd make some wry comment - and I'd quickly look up just as he was turning away. But there'd be a glint in the corner of his eye, and he'd smirk every so casually. It just broke me up every time! Russ was a very humble, kind-hearted, generous man, and I'll miss him very much.

Blessings to the family as you celebrate your dad. Russ was always sweet to me. I will always remember Russ's steady person. Man of faith, loved his kids, cared for his wife.
